Christmas is just around the corner.

Living in America, and having my family in England, is hard during the holidays. Each year as I get older, Christmas festivities mean less to me. Don’t get me wrong, Christmas is all about the birth of Jesus, and I will be at church, but it’s a lonely time for me.

I don’t even get the gifts for family anymore. The cost of postage is outrageous, so my daughter has the money, and gets all of their gifts.

Up until 2 years ago I used to buy stocking stuffers for the girls, but the postage was more that the cost of the gifts.

So no shopping for gifts, wrapping etc. The 17th of December is no different than any other day for me. I hear my friends getting excited about shopping, etc., and I am thankful that I talked my husband into getting Christmas week at the beach, many years ago.

Living in Florida has it’s compensations, but it kills me not to be with family.

  1. As I write to my sisters in New England we all feel nostalgia for the big family get together and even though they are closer, the same applies. I am blessed to have my daughter and family close by. Happy Christmas Susie!

  2. Thank you for sharing!!… Christmas is about the “heart”, the feelings one has… not about decorations, presents or even church… and home is where the heart is, were memories are stored and one can visit home anytime one wishes and it will not cost anything… 🙂

    Until we meet again..
May love and laughter light your days,
and warm your heart and home.
May good and faithful friends be yours,
    wherever you may roam.
May peace and plenty bless your world
    with joy that long endures.
    May all life’s passing seasons
bring the best to you and yours!

  3. I can understand your feelings. We have our daughter and her family only two hours away so we will be there with them for Christmas Eve which is when they are doing their Christmas . But our son who lives in England will be in Cyprus with his girlfriend and her family and I started to miss him when I put up the Christmas tree two weeks ago. So I can understand your feelings as you are in a worse position than me in that all your family is the other side of the ocean. But you will be in my thoughts and I will raise a glass to you during our Christmas dinner.

  4. Ugh! Postage & shipping is outrageous! A couple years ago we gift shopped for our grandchildren. It took $180 to ship $100 in gifts!!!! I swore “Never Again!” From that point forward, I still shop but I do it on Amazon. During the holidays they’ll offer a free trial Prime membership and gifts ship free with Amazon Prime. With 5 kids, their spouses and 7 grandchildren with special occasions, holidays, birthdays, I kept the membership at $9 a month for the free shipping but I also get free online books monthly with First Reads and free Prime Video where I can watch tv shows and movies as well. Thoroughly enjoying all the benefits!

  5. I know how hard it is on you not to be with your children and grandchildren for the holidays and the postage to ship is unreal. Wishing you, Len and your families a Merry Christmas and wonderful New Year!
